The Found Pencil

At the end of break time, Abdullah saw something shining under a desk. He bent down and picked it up. It was a pencil — but not just any pencil. It was blue and gold, with a tiny rocket on top that spun when you blew on it.

"Wow," whispered Abdullah. "Nobody is looking. I could put it in my bag."

He held the pencil tightly. His heart was beating fast. Then he remembered what his mother always said: "Allah sees us even when no one else does."

Abdullah looked around the class. At the back, Bilal was searching inside his bag, then on the floor, then in his bag again. His eyes were full of tears.

Abdullah walked over slowly. "Bilal, is this yours?"

Bilal's face lit up like the sun. "My grandfather gave it to me! Thank you, thank you!"

Abdullah went back to his seat. He did not have the rocket pencil anymore, but inside he felt something much better — light, warm and happy. That evening he told his mother everything, and she hugged him and said, "That feeling is the reward of honesty."

What is not ours, we return — even when nobody is watching.

Talk about it together

  1. Why did Abdullah's heart beat fast when he held the pencil?
  2. How do you think Bilal felt before and after?
  3. What would you do if you found something that wasn't yours?
